Hunting

This page is dedicated to Dan Kerr, my Dad, the man with whom I hunted until his passing on March 2, 2006.

The picture above is the sun setting the night before opening day. Make that the opening day of rifle. That’s the first day to me.

Camp is in Plumville, PA where Dad grew up. Mom still owns 45 of the original 99 acres that my Great-Great Grandfather purchased in the early 1900s. Dad sold the buildings and the land they sat on in the 80's. They got to be more than he could maintain. My parents then bought the trailor and Dad put in electricity and a deck. He never got around to drilling a well or septic. Not too hospitable. But just fine for hunting. I think that was all part of his plan.
I got up to the camp early Sunday. No jacket required today. Must have been nearly 70 degrees. Warmest I can remember. Washed the outside of the trailer and cleaned inside. I walked up the hill to the tree stand and opened it up.
It was still warm the next morning.
6:30 am
I was at the tree stand
7:30 am
I saw three doe come through. They followed a path just down the hill, about 50 yards or so.
7:50 am
Another doe came through following the same path followed by a button buck. The doe stopped to graze at which point the button buck began to play, raising up and kicking at the doe. I heard the sound of another… I was able to pick it up in the binoculars. There was a rack. My heart starts to race a bit at this point. I'm thinking... OK... in this county, the buck must be 4 point on one side... 1.2.3.4 OK, I could make out 4 points, Now...is each point at least one inch????? Well... It is difficult to say at 50 yards but I was pretty certain the smaller ones were an inch. (What kind of rule is this anyway???
7:54 am
I shot once... and got this one at about 50 yards
